Janice Perlman wrote the first in-depth account of life in the favelas, a book hailed as one of the most important works in global urban studies in the last 30 years.

Now, in Favela, Perlman carries that story forward to the present.

I've read the reviews by others. Their 'review titles' are all of what I would have used to title this book myself.

I loved this book. FAVELA is in my opinion a fundamental book to everyone who wants to understand this urban phenomenon.

"Favela" revisits and updates Janice Perlman's classic, "The Myth of Marginality." "Favela" is exceptionally good: a combination of empirical social science and ethnography that completes and extends her earlier work.
